The Gatare washing station is located in the hills of western Rwanda, in the Nyamasheke district, one of the country's most renowned coffee-growing areas. This region, situated near Lake Kivu, is characterized by its mineral-rich volcanic soils, a temperate climate, and regular rainfall—ideal conditions for producing high-quality coffees.
The coffee is grown at an altitude of 2,050 meters by approximately 575 smallholders, who work family farms with an average of 500 coffee trees each. At Gatare, only the Red Bourbon variety is processed, known for offering elegant, complex, and very expressive profiles.
After manual harvesting, the coffee undergoes a washed process that includes pulping, fermentation, sorting, and manual selection. Afterward, it is sun-dried on raised African beds for an average of 21 days, allowing for slow and even drying.
