The Refisa washing station is located in the village of the same name, within the Nensebo district, in Ethiopia's Oromia region, very close to the borders with Sidama and the Bale Mountains. The coffee is grown at about 2,150 meters above sea level by 588 small producers, who work plots of less than 2 hectares in the villages of Refisa, Roricho, Bulga, and Solina.
The producers follow traditional methods and environmentally friendly cultivation. Since 2019, the Refisa station receives ripe cherries, usually transported by donkey or horse, and processes them under SNAP's management.
Once at the station, the cherries ferment in the shade for 45 to 60 hours. Then they are washed to remove the mucilage and the coffee is dried on raised African beds, in layers of 5 to 10 cm, for 7 to 10 days. With 200 drying beds, the station can ensure uniform and careful drying for each batch.
The Refisa station also plays an important role in the community, providing producers with access to infrastructure and services such as roads, a hospital, and a school.
