Banko Gotiti is a town in the Gedeb district of the Gedeo zone, where Yirgacheffe is located. The local cooperative was founded in 2012 independently of Worka, a larger organization, and has around 300 members who grow various traditional Ethiopian coffee varieties.
In Ethiopia, many producers work small plots and also grow other crops. During the harvest, they usually take the coffee cherries to a nearby washing station, where they are weighed, sorted, and processed. Since cherries from many producers are mixed into daily lots, it is difficult to know exactly who produced the coffee in each batch. Nevertheless, efforts are made to buy from the same stations each year through export partners.
In this region, farmers usually do not have access to fertilizers or pesticides. For natural coffees, the cherries are sorted, cleaned, and dried on raised beds for 8–25 days, depending on the weather.
