Gakenke washing station, located in Kayanza province, Burundi, works with 1,780 registered small producers spread across 22 nearby hills. Most families grow about 250 coffee plants, primarily Red Bourbon, and hand-pick the cherries at their optimal ripeness.
At the station, the cherries are floated, hand-sorted, and depulped within 6 hours of delivery. Afterwards, the parchment is slowly dried on raised beds for 2 to 3 weeks, with constant sorting throughout the process. Each lot is kept separate by station, day, and quality, ensuring full traceability.
