Roast types: espresso, filter, and omni
Some coffees make you close your eyes at the first sip. It's not magic: it's science, fire, and time.
Roasting is the moment the green bean transforms into what we know as coffee. And depending on how it's done, the result can be intense and chocolatey, or light and fruity.
At Dalston Coffee, we roast each origin with how you're going to prepare it in mind: espresso, filter, or both.
Here are the differences 👇
For espresso
This type of roast is designed for espresso machines or moka pots, where water passes under pressure and extraction is fast and intense.
Therefore, the beans are roasted a little darker, seeking balance and sweetness.
The result: a coffee with more body, less acidity, and notes of chocolate, caramel, or nuts.
Perfect if you like that creamy, round espresso, or if you drink it with milk in the mornings.
💡 Think of it as "comfort coffee": solid, sweet, and straightforward.
For filter
Here the coffee is roasted lighter, to highlight its freshest and most natural side.
It's the ideal profile for methods like V60, Chemex, or Aeropress, where extraction is slower and more precise.
The filter roast allows the origin's notes to shine through: fruit, flowers, vibrant acidity.
It's a juicier, lighter coffee with many layers of flavor.
💡 Perfect for those who enjoy exploring cups that change with each sip.
Omni
"Omniroast" is the versatile version of coffee roasting.
It's neither as developed as espresso nor as light as filter: it's the middle ground designed to work well with both methods.
Ideal if you like to experiment at home — one day you try it as espresso, another in a V60 — and always get a balanced cup, with good sweetness and controlled acidity.
💡 A roast for the curious, for those who don't stick to just one method.
In summary
Each roast type has its own character:
-
Espresso: body, sweetness, and more crema.
-
Filter: clarity, acidity, and greater perception of fruity, floral notes.
-
Omni: balance and freedom.
